Wolfgang Wieland Receives Inaugural Ashtekar Award—Sponsored by Universe

During the Loops '26 conference at Hangzhou (China), the inaugural Ashtekar Award (funded by the journal Universe) was conferred to Dr. Wolfgang Wieland
[f]or his intellectual independence, service to the LQG community and to the ISLQG itself, and for his numerous and diverse research contributions, that demonstrate deep insights and technical skill, notably his works on edge modes, Planck luminosity bound, quantum geometry of light cones, and quantum reference frames. —Daniele Oriti on behalf of the selection committee
Dr. Wolfgang Wieland is a European theoretical physicist from Austria, who is currently a junior group leader at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg. He received his PhD from Aix-Marseille Université (Centre de Physique Théorique) in 2013. He was a postdoc in the USA (Penn State), Canada (Perimeter Institute), Austria (IQOQI-Vienna) and Germany (FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg), before receiving a Heisenberg fellowship at the German Research Federation (DFG) in 2024. In 2016, he was awarded the Bronstein Prize for postdoctoral researchers in LQG.
