Quantum Gravity Meets Quantum Information: Foundations, Frameworks and Frontiers

This year's FAU² Workshop, “Quantum Gravity Meets Quantum Information: Foundations, Frameworks and Frontiers,” which took place from 7 to 9 July 2026 at the Erlangen Centre for Astroparticle Physics (ECAP) at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, brought together researchers working at the interface between quantum gravity, the fundamentals of quantum physics and quantum information theory to explore how ideas from these disciplines can contribute to a deeper understanding of the nature of spacetime and the foundations of quantum theory.


Recent developments have highlighted the importance of information-theoretical concepts in addressing fundamental questions in gravitational physics. Topics such as quantum reference frames, quantum clocks, entanglement, black hole information, measurement and observers in gravitational systems, and open quantum systems provide interesting perspectives in quantum gravity. At the same time, gravitational physics raises conceptual challenges for quantum theory, particularly concerning the notions of time, subsystem relativity, relational formulations, and the role of information.



The workshop focused on fostering a shared understanding of how concepts from information theory can deepen our knowledge of spacetime and gravitational physics, while at the same time addressing fundamental questions concerning, reference frames, subsystems and the role of information in quantum gravity and quantum theory in general. The three-day scientific programme included invited and contributed talks and panel discussions on various topics, including quantum reference frames, quantum clocks, information about black holes, holography, relational approaches, quantum gravity models in the context of cosmology and black holes, open quantum systems, decoherence, entanglement and the philosophy of science. In addition to fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and identifying future avenues for joint research in these areas, the workshop encouraged interactions among the participants through a poster session, a welcome reception and a barbecue dinner, thereby providing valuable opportunities for scientific exchange in both formal and informal settings.
